RichardI earned my bachelor's degree in international studies at Dickinson College because it offered the greatest exposure to my many academic interests. I then went on to work in the private sector before returning to school to earn my graduate degree from the University of Connecticut. I have spent time studying in Italy on two different occasions which were professionally and personally transformational. It instilled within me a profound love of the Italian language, culture, and history and was the inspiration for my pursuit of a doctorate. I began tutoring students during my first year of graduate studies. I worked with individual students on history, literature, and Italian culture. I then went on to become a teaching assistant and finally teaching courses at the University of Connecticut and other nearby schools. I currently tutor students in Italian, American and European history, world history, languages, social studies, and conversational Italian. My personal studies as well as my teaching experience has taught me how important it is to make history and languages come alive for students. It wasn't until I experienced the culture and language I had studied in person that I truly understood the power of immersion. I endeavor to bring a bit of that to each of the students I tutor so they are able to more fully integrate their studies.

PiperI'm currently attending the University of Maryland - Baltimore County for my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. I believe successful tutors can break down problems into simpler steps that students can understand, master, and then build back up. That underlying foundational understanding of a subject is the key to learning, because then students can apply what they know to new concepts with full comprehension, making retention and problem solving easier. My goal is to help students learn successfully and to become confident in their abilities. I know firsthand how valuable tutoring can be, because I benefited from tutoring myself. I'm looking forward to helping students with algebra, calculus, reading, science, physics, writing, elementary and middle school math, geometry, elementary and middle school science, Italian, and Spanish. When I have free time, I like to play with my dog, knit, and play field hockey.

AndreaI graduated from Ohio State University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Romance Studies and a minor in linguistics. While pursuing my college degree, I also worked as a Spanish tutor on a one-on-one basis and helped two pre-teen children gain a better understanding of the language. My experience as a tutor has taught me the importance of creating personalized lessons and building rapport with students. After getting to know my students' personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and interests, I've been able to come up with lessons that are more engaging and effective. Also, as a lover of languages, I love teaching students how to communicate more effectively. Along with Spanish and English, I am also able to tutor anyone interested in improving their understanding of French, German, Italian, and Latin. I believe that the best way to get students to master a new language is not by giving them the answers, but rather helping them learn how to work through their challenges and discover the solution on their own. When I'm not studying languages, I like to spend my time watching TV shows, writing, and traveling abroad. Along with spending a semester abroad in Rome, I've also had the pleasure of visiting seven European countries.
