DeannaI have been helping students meet or exceed their academic goals since I was 17. I noticed that many local elementary school kids were lagging behind their grade level targets, so I worked with a local principal to connect struggling students with somebody older who could help. I continued this work into my college years, where I worked with child and adult learners on subjects such as Study Skills, Adult Illiteracy, Reading Comprehension, Science, and Mathematics. I believe in helping students by taking a personalized approach. Many kids are sick of structured environments after eight hours of school, so sitting them down to do endless practice problems may not be the correct approach. Sometimes, I incorporate my passion for extreme couponing to illustrate subtraction (and take a bow for all the money I save). I also find it beneficial to teach reading by allowing the student to dictate what they read, rather than sticking to a school's arbitrary list. If that sounds like the approach for you, I can't wait to meet you and your student!
