ThomasI'm a tutor based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Although I live in a bigger city now, I grew up in a very small town. The lack of entertainment options in my hometown led me to become an averous reader. The reading I did as a child led to a fascination with history, eventually leading me to get my bachelor's in history from Transylvania University in Kentucky. I worked for awhile at a software company after graduating, but eventually moved to England to pursue a master's degree in modern history from Durham University. My work with tutors and teachers throughout my educational career has left a profound impact on me. Now, I'm taking what I've learned as a student and applying it towards being a tutor. As a tutor, I believe in the importance of making real connections between student and material, in order to drive student engagement. This allows a student to develop a real passion in the material rather than just learn what's required for a test. Outside of the classroom, I've also worked with children as a swim coach and as an assistant scoutmaster. These experiences have reinforced my belief that good teaching requires positivity, patience, and enthusiasm. My experience has also taught me that every student is different, and that each will require a targeted lesson plan designed for them alone. I hope the skills I've developed can help you achieve in the classroom.

Study Skills and Organization
SarahI attended Marquette University, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I earned my bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, with a focus on Water. While studying for my degree, I had the opportunity to travel with the organization, Engineers without Borders, where I worked with other students and professionals on a water purification project, as well as an electrification project. I had other opportunities to do volunteer work using my knowledge of engineering. Upon graduation, I decided to continue on to earn my master's at the University of Minnesota, which I also took Environmental Engineering, this time with a focus on International Sustainable Development and Water Engineering. I work with a group of engineering consultants now, and with the experience I have had with tutoring other students, I'd like to give back by tutoring students of all ages in math and engineering subjects. Or Spanish, which I am fluent in. I am very patient with the students I tutor, and have excellent organizational skills, which I like to pass on to my students. I believe in Montessori teaching methods, which are learner led, and allow me the freedom to use different teaching styles with different students. In my free time, I like to travel, play sports, read, and try new things.

LawrenceI spent 27 years practicing environmental law, and I decided at that point that it was time to make a change. I've always been interested in teaching, and I have a bachelor's degree in history, so teaching social studies seemed like a natural choice. I've also spent a quarter of a century as a Scout leader, where I taught life skills to students of all ages. In addition to this, I have mentored young lawyers and helped them work on their writing and research skills, along with aspiring lawyers at the high school and undergraduate levels. I spent a lot of time working with students individually and in groups, so I really enjoy tutoring. As a classroom teacher, I've enjoyed helping my students prepare for AP exams. I also write my own tests for my world history course. For my government and economics classes, I put together study guides for my students, and I believe that these helped students increase their grades and test scores. When I work with students as a tutor, I discuss the subject with a student and see how they feel about it. I also review the syllabus and any exams and assignments the student has to identify areas of focus. Sometimes students need clarification on concepts, but sometimes students need to improve their study skills. Once I identify the problem, I customize a lesson plan based on that student's needs. I also utilize different approaches to present information since students have their own unique learning style.
