NelsonI've tutored for the past 12 years, helping students better understand subject matter and prepare for standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, PSAT, and AP exams. When I tutor students, I want them to develop a level of understanding where they can answer questions on their own, as opposed to just getting the correct answer today. If student answers a practice problem incorrectly, I help them understand the details behind the concept before I show them how to take the steps to find the right answer. In fact, when we work on problems together, I ask students to explain to me why they believe a specific answer is the right one. If they can't explain the answer sufficiently, that's when I know they need additional training on the concepts. Also, at the end of sessions, I always do a quick recap with my students, so that they can gain visibility into where their biggest opportunities are, and I can give suggestions to help them improve before our next session.

JamieI'm a tutor who is based out of Louisville, where I enjoy learning, cooking, and traveling when I'm not working with students in the classroom. I have my bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Spelman College and my master's degree in Neuroscience from Tulane. As a tutor, I'm able to help students in a variety of subject areas. Some of the subjects I've helped students with in the past include algebra, chemistry, calculus, and more. As an undergraduate student at Spelman, I spent time tutoring in several math and science classes. I also spent time working as a chemistry teaching assistant. While in graduate school at Tulane I was a teaching assistant for three years, where I taught several advanced science courses. I specialize in tutoring math courses up to Calculus II in addition to biological science courses. I believe that every student has the ability to succeed in their math and science courses. Sometimes they just need a little help unlocking their potential. That's how I view my role as a tutor. I adjust my teaching plan to fit the individualized need of each student, and provide targeted exercises to help each of my students improve.
